This blog is for you boys, the guys who aren’t ever talked about. When I say “the worst teams” I’m going to talk about the teams at the verrrry bottom of the stats. The teams that make people ask, “they have a team?” To understand how I picked these teams out, I looked at the records, the teams they’ve played, and even checked out the pairwise, or the statistical process the NCAA uses to choose the 16 team tournament. So, without further ado, the 3 absolute gong show teams in college hockey.

The 3rd worst team in college hockey right now is Sacred Heart.

They like to think of themselves as a team that can hang in the Atlantic Hockey conference. Well, Sacred Heart, you can’t. You do have three wins and one of those is up against Notre Dame, but it looks like a fluke of a game. With a not so strong record of 3-8-0 it’s not looking good for you this year. It’s concerning that you have allowed in 46 goals in 11 games. With an average of 4.23 goals against per game, your defense needs to work out what they’re doing wrong or it’s going to be a very long season for your goalies. Sacred Heart, you might be bad; but you’re not the worst, so good job with that.

The 2nd worst team in college hockey is Alaska Anchorage.

Now this is a team way, way up there in the north. They almost shouldn’t count as a NCAA team. When you look at their roster, there are only 2 players who are even from the continental United States, with the rest being from Canada, Alaska or over in Europe. These boys are playing hockey, but it’s not pretty and it’s purely Canadian. After getting a tie to start the season against North Dakota (who should probably still be ashamed of that one). Alaska went on to lose 6 games in a row before earning their first win against Lake Superior.

Don’t worry, though, Alaska went on to a loss and tie the next weekend against Alabama-Huntsville. If you can only manage a tie against a team that’s in the deep south, then you aren’t going to be a Frozen Four contender come April. If Alaska Anchorage does make it though, I’ll write a letter apologizing for that comment. Alaska’s 1-7-2 record is earning them a place in the Sin Bin, you aren’t even the best at being the worst. Therefore, you’re number 2 on the list.

The worst team in college hockey is St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence has a record of 1-10-1. Yep, that’s correct, they are the first team to earn double digit losses. Some may argue how they “played good teams,” but I won’t accept that as an argument. St. Lawrence is by far the worst team in D1 hockey. The stats don’t lie. They have allowed 49 goals this season in 12 games, while only scoring 24. St. Lawrence came out in the beginning of the year with people thinking they could be a contender. I’m curious if they’re going to ever play a team they can beat, although they lost to Brown so that’s got to be depressing.

The one happy aspect of their lives at St. Lawrence is a win against Wisconsin. But don’t worry, they haven’t won since then. One last jab against St. Lawrence is they didn’t even get creative with the nickname… they are the “Saints” of St. Lawrence, they took a L on even that, earning St. Lawrence, the most depressing award of worst team in college hockey. Congrats boys, you did it. Now I suggest doing something different, try outscoring the other team. That seems to work for other people.
