Last season, the #9 Longhorn’s finished with a 10-4 record. That was quite an improvement from their 7-6 2017 year. After a Sugar Bowl win over #7 Georgia during last year’s bowl season, it was looking like Texas was regaining its rightful place back at the top of the Big 12 as they don’t show signs of slowing down.
Tom Herman is entering his third season at the helm for Longhorn football and has done a fantastic job so far as he has brought the program back to the top after the short losing cycle they were stuck in before he took the reins. Not to be misunderstood, Texas still has a formidable opponent to try and overcome and that is Oklahoma. The Longhorns did have impressive wins last year beating the Sooners two times, once in the regular season and once for the Big 12 Championship.
However, Longhorn fans have a lot to be excited about as the 2019 season starts to rise.
Longhorns Preseason Ranking: 10 (Amway Coaches Poll)
2019 marks the second year that the Longhorns have been ranked in the coach’s poll, and this year happens to be the highest the program has ranked since the 2010 season when they were ranked fourth in the country. That ranking followed a 13-1 2009 season when Colt McCoy was the quarterback.
The Longhorns had some impressive wins back during their 2018 campaign. Some of the notable wins included Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Georgia. None of those games were easy for the Longhorns as they had to put up a fight to walk away with those three wins.
Notable Losses
WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey
LT Calvin Anderson
TE: Andrew Beck
LB Gary Johnson
LB Anthony Wheeler
2019 Outlook
The Longhorns players and fans have something to be hopeful about coming into the season with a stacked offense. Returning to lead the offense at the quarterback position is Sam Ehlinger who had a stellar sophomore season. In 2018, Ehlinger threw for 3,292 yards along, with 25 touchdowns and five interceptions.
In the backfield, they will have Keaontay Ingram entering his sophomore season. Last year, as a true freshman, he rushed for over 700 yards and averaged five yards a carry.
The main receiver for the Longhorns seems to be Collin Johnson who caught 68 catches, for 985 yards and seven touchdowns.
If Texas wants to have a chance to compete for a playoff spot, they will need to step it up on the defensive side of things. At the end of the 2018 season, Texas ranked 67th in defense in the country. They did, however, rank 28th against the run, which was impressive and something that shouldn’t be overlooked.
