2019 New Mexico Bowl: Central Michigan vs. SDSU

This year in the New Mexico Bowl, we will get to see a couple of solid teams square off in Albuquerque. It has been a great year for the Aztecs as they improved their record from a year ago. After going 7-6 last season, San Diego State went 9-3 with some crazy score lines. For Central Michigan, the ending of the season wasn’t particularly what they had planned, losing the MAC championship to Miami (OH), by a scoreline of 26-21. It will be a very interesting matchup in terms of their style of play.

How They Got Here: Central Michigan

The Chippewas have scored 40+ in all but one of their wins this season. Their offense has had a couple of stutters and it will be interesting to see how this offense continues to roll against a VERY good Aztecs defense. It’ll be interesting to see how they are able to put points up on the board in this game.

How They Got Here: San Diego State

San Diego State has had a GREAT season. Even though they finished second in their division, they have competed with everyone on their schedule. Their three losses came by a combined average loss of just a bit more than four points. They have relied heavily on their defense to get to this point in the season, holding teams to an average of just 12 points a game.

Players to Watch: Central Michigan

Jonathan Ward has been a spark plug for this Central Michigan team. Coming into the matchup he is averaging just about 6 yards per carry, while having 15 touchdowns on the season. The senior looks to end his career with the Chippewas on a high note. Even though he is their main threat in the backfield, look for him to really make an impact in the passing game.

Players to Watch: San Diego State

Kyahva Tezino is my player to watch for San Diego State due to his presence on the defensive side of the ball. This defense has been one of the best all season, allowing more than 20 points just TWICE this entire season. It is in large part due to this beast pictured above. Tezino has had a down year compared to his season’s stats last season, while going from 126 total tackles last season, to 96 this season he has been a big reason for this spectacular defense. The senior is going to do everything in his power to slow down the Chippewas.

Gambling Picks (SDSU -3.5, O/U 40.5)

First things first, give me San Diego State -3.5. That is EASY money there. I don’t think that Central Michigan has played a defense recently that can compare to this Aztecs defense. I know that life is short and you hate to bet the under, but if you’re trying to make some money, the under is the route to go here.
