GUESS WHO’S BACK! It’s me again with my third straight year of Brewers end of the season blogging. This year, it isn’t coming on my website… ITS COMING TO YOU VIA STUDENT UNION SPORTS
Where Are the Brewers Sitting?
Record: 17-19 Playoff Position: 10th (.5 GB of Wild Card, technically)
Where Are the Brewers Coming From?
This season has been a struggle. The pitching has been spotty from the 1st inning until the 6th inning. After that it’s smooth sailing with Devin Williams, the owner of the best change up in baseball and Josh Hader, the best reliever in the National League as voted on the last 2 years. The hitting, well from the 1st inning until the 9th, it can be a struggle.
The Brew Crew is 12-12 against the NL Central which hasn’t been as strong as it had seemed before the 60 game sprint started. Included in that, is a 5-5 record against Pittsburgh, owners of the least amount of wins in baseball, who even swept the Crew in PNC in late August. It’s somewhat surprising that the Brewers are where they are when they have the 2nd worst run differential in the National League.
Positives
- Josh Hader just got the MLB record for appearences without allowing a hit with 12 and hasn’t allowed a hit in 11 2/3 innings. He is 9/10 in save opportunities.
- Brandon Woodruff still looks like an ace. In 8 starts, he’s thrown 41 innings and has 48 k’s.
- Despite the slow start, Christian Yelich has 9 home runs.
Negatives
- The other 4 starters in the rotation. Adrian Houser, the Brewers 2nd starter, has an ERA of 4.97.
- No qualified hitter has an OPS of .850. Yikes.
- Plenty of others, but I’m blogger not a book writer.
Coming Up
This weekend, the Crew play a 3 game set in Cleveland. I can’t say I’m all too excited. However, we do have our 3 hottest pitchers on the mound coming off an off day. Here are the pitching matchups for each game:
Friday: Corbin Burnes (1-0, 2.78 ERA) vs Carlos Carrasco (2-3, 3.75 ERA) Saturday: Woodruff (2-3, 3.67 ERA) vs Aaron Civale (3-4, 3.72 ERA) Sunday: Brett Anderson (2-2, 4.18 ERA) vs Shane Bieber (6-0, 1.20 ERA)
Here’s to a hopefully successful September. Go Crew!
