Bryce Thompson (Irmo, SC), a 4-star wide receiver, will not be signing with the in-state South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday, altering his original plan. Thompson had been committed to the Gamecocks since December 13.
Thompson had planned to sign his National Letter of Intent during National Signing Day tomorrow, but as questions arose regarding his academic status, his high school coach Tom Knotts spoke with The State regarding his star players’s status. Knotts would not comment regarding Thompson’s newest plan.
Currently, Marshall has made a late push to steal the coveted recruit, but do not seem to be favorited at this time. 247sports still projects Thompson will follow through with his commitment, with a 100% forecast for the Gamecocks. Marshall head coach Doc Holliday and other coaching staff members were in attendance for Thompson’s basketball game on Tuesday.
Recently, Thompson was quoted as calling Marshall “a backup” compared to South Carolina. Thompson does not believe that his grades will hinder his ability to qualify academically, but did state that if it were to happen, he would choose “Marshall…instead of going to JUCO.”
South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson has been the main recruiter for Thompson, and Thompson also mentioned that he promised Robinson that his grades would be good enough for the school. Thompson dominated on both sides of the ball during his senior season, with 1,998 total yards of offense, 38 touchdowns, 27 tackles, an interception and a blocked kick.
Thompson was previously committed to Virginia Tech, before announcing his decommittment in June.
While he will not be signing Wednesday, it appears that Thompson is still headed to Columbia, just a little later than anticipated.
