On November 18, 2018, Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith suffered a spiral compound fracture of the tibia & fibula in his right leg on a sack during a game against the Houston Texans.
Smith endured 17 surgeries to first repair his fibula and tibia, then to fend off a bacterial infection that almost cost him his life.
This year Alex has shocked thousands by being able to not only step on an NFL field, but by being able to start for the Washington Football Team. Smith led the team to meaningful wins that has propelled Washington into the postseason for the first time since 2015.
His wife, Liz Smith, wanted to honor Alex’s journey and comeback with a special trophy.
The 2020 season is still yet to be over for Alex. Smith is currently preparing for his first playoff game since 2018 with the Chiefs, they lost by one point to the Titans. Washington will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday night at FedEx Field. Smith remains questionable with a sore right calf.
This still probably won’t be Smith’s last trophy of the season. Many expect him to win the NFL’s Comeback Player of The Year award.
How could the trophy possibly go to anyone else?
In eight games, Smith had just 1,582 passing yards along with 6 touchdowns to 8 interceptions. Not a great season statistically, but without Smith Washington wouldn’t have been able to turn their season around.
The only comparable injury to Smith’s would be Joe Theismann’s injury (same EXACT injury) caused by a Lawrence Taylor sack, which would be the last play of Theismann’s career. Smith was told he might need his leg amputated or that he could lose his life. Who really thought that playing football would be realistic for him?
