One of the great things about rivalries in college football is how unique they are. No other rivalry in American sports is quite like the football game played between the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy. The Black Knights of Army and the Midshipmen of Navy play the last regular season game of the year in college football. America’s Game is reserved for its very own weekend.
Army-Navy is a rivalry unlike any other. In most rivalries, the two combatants are tied by a mutual hatred and a clash of cultures. Army-Navy is defined by the sense of camaraderie, brotherhood and mutual respect that is forged between brothers in arms.
This year will be the 119th meeting between the two schools. Navy holds an edge in the series at 60-51-7. However, Army has won the last two after having to watch Navy sing second for fourteen years, the longest streak in the history of the series.
Army struck first in the 2018 edition of Army-Navy, announcing their uniforms for this year’s game. The First Infantry Division is one of America’s most legendary units. To honor the 100th anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended the First World War, Army dropped this badass video announcing their uniforms which would honor the legacy of the Big Red 1.
The best thing about Army-Navy, aside from the passion and tradition, is arguably the spirit videos made by Cadets from Army and Midshipmen from Navy. Often humorous, these videos bring the rivalry at the academies and on the battlefield to life.
The pregame pageantry has a life of its own. The Cadets and Midshipmen march on the field to shake hands and take part in pregame festivities. Even getting the game ball to the stadium is part of the ceremony before kickoff.
This year features a game between two teams who had very different seasons. Army comes in sporting a 9-2 record while Navy limps in at 3-9. This is the one game for both teams where record or ranking has no bearing on the outcome. It is always a fiercely competitive game that comes down to the last couple plays or possessions. This year should be no different with Navy looking to avenge the last two meetings.
