B1G Hockey Splits to Close January

I thought this weekend would separate the top of the B1G from the bottom of the conference. The only decisive series was Notre Dame’s sweep of their ol’ rival Michigan State.

Michigan & Penn State

Penn State needed a sweep this weekend. They opened up with a trip to Ann Arbor that ended in a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Wolverines.

The second matchup was Super Saturday at The Garden in Manhattan, a 5-2 Nittany Lion victory. Great recovery by Penn State.

Wisconsin @ Minnesota

Minnesota beat the wheels off the Badgers on Friday riding 9 goals to a 9-4 win at home. Wisconsin rallied hard and won the second game Saturday night.

Michigan State @ Notre Dame

Notre Dame took the first game 6-3. Saturday night didn’t get much better for the Spartans as they dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime.

Standings

1. Ohio State 29 points

2. Notre Dame 25

3. Minnesota 24

4. Michigan 21

5. Michigan State 20

6. Penn State 20

7. Wisconsin 20

Final Thoughts

No one is really out of this thing. It feels like none of the bottom three are doing themselves any favors and I’d consider them pretty much done at this point in the conference slate.

Michigan is a sweep away from being right near the top.

Ohio State and Notre Dame are very good hockey teams.

Minnesota is still up there, if they get consistent down the stretch this could be a 4-way war for the top spots going into the conference tournament.
