At this point, the nation is used to certain schools having recruiting classes that are offensive. Duke is one of those schools, and this season they outdid themselves. Late last night, Marvin Bagley III told the nation during his announcement of where he would be attending college, that he would be there a year earlier than expected. Once the number one player in the class of 2018, a reclassification put him in the same ranking, but a year earlier. Now, he will be suiting up for the Blue Devils starting this season.
For those of you unfamiliar with Bagley’s game, it is art. It is like a ninja in a silk kimono, but that ninja is also a powerlifter. The southpaw loves to remind everyone watching him why the breakaway rim was invented. He is a capable shooter, smooth in the post, and absolutely brilliant in transition. The thought of putting him next to fellow freshman Trevon Duval is honestly going to give me nightmares until the season starts. And then those nightmares will manifest, and I will have the pleasure of watching them in real life. Below is a mixtape from last season. You’re welcome.
In the immediate aftermath of this huge news, a lot has been happening. Firstly, it increases the number of guys Duke snagged in the top 7 from 3 to 4. Yes, you read that correctly. Coach K convinced 4 of the 7 best High School players in the nation to join him in Durham, North Carolina. That is more than 50% for those of you keeping track at home. Look below for proof. If you think I doctored that picture, here is a link to ESPN’s top 100 recruits for the class of 2017. I’m having trouble believing it, too. We will get through this together.
Also, don’t forget that those four guys will be slotted next to Grayson Allen, who is still one of the most athletic dudes in the nation, and Marques Bolden, who will hopefully not have to face the injury bug again this season. So that gives Duke at least six players that are absolutely elite prospects and possible first round draft choices in next year’s NBA Draft.
The decision also bumped Duke’s title odds from 7-1 all the way to 3-1, according to Westgate, which is by far tops in the nation. For reference, Kentucky is second at 7-1.
In terms of on-court production, Duke is going to be appointment viewing every time they touch the floor. This team is going to be FAST. They are going to run, and then when they are done with that, they are going to run some more. Then, they will block shots into the third row, and then get right back to running. And dunking. And running more.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is this might be Coach K’s most talented group ever. When I say that, I am including the Jah/Tyus/Justise championship team, and the Laettner/Hurley/Hill teams.
Good luck to the rest of the nation. Hopefully, you will be able to keep up with this team because defending them just might not be an option.
