Best college football players in the transfer portal for 2023

Each year, the NCAA transfer portal window opens and we see a flood of hopeful players who want to get the top spots to develop their football careers in the right way. The 2023 transfer portal has just opened for the new cycle and we have already seen a wave of action and some promising prospects for college football and the NFL.

This cycle appears to be dominated by quarterbacks currently but there are some great options at various positions. It looks to be an interesting transfer portal and there have been some surprises so far. In the article below, we give a quick roundup of eight of the best college football players currently in the 2023 transfer portal cycle – enjoy!

1. Devin Leary – NC State

Leary is undoubtedly the top prospect in the 2023 transfer portal so far. This is mainly due to his versatility and performances, and the fact that he could easily fit in with any team. He is a former four-star recruit and had been in discussion for the Heisman Trophy before being injured. His time at NC State appears to be over and it will be interesting to see where he ends up – whoever lands him has a big win – providing he can stay injury free.

2. DJ Uiagalelei – Clemson

Uiagalelei has boundless talent and has been ranked as one of the top prospects. However, so far, he has fallen short of expectations. His initial 2021 season as the Clemson QB was disappointing and he has been inconsistent this year. Entering the transfer portal is seen as a move to try and find somewhere that he fits better – particularly a team with a top offensive coach, like UCLA.

3. Hudson Card – Texas

Hudson Card got unlucky in 2022 as Texas was seemingly swamped with talents like Quinn Ewers and the approach of Arch Manning. Therefore, his considerable talents would be better suited elsewhere as he may simply continue to be a benchwarmer by staying with Texas. There is a lot of interest already and one of the top contenders is believed to be Notre Dame.

4. Luke Altmyer – Ole Miss

At the start of the 2022 season, bets were on that Luke Altmyer would start as QB for Ole Miss. Coincidentally, if you want info on college football and the point spread for NFL games this week, there are many sites you can check out.

Ultimately, the bets fell short and Altmyer actually ended up as the reserve to Jaxson Dart. Therefore, he has entered the transfer portal to get a starting role and try to live up to his potential.

5. Jeff Sims – Georgia Tech

Sims has been relatively successful so far at Georgia Tech but some feel that he hasn’t yet been allowed to flourish and unleash his full potential with the team. As a result, it’s believed that by entering the transfer portal, he can gain the attention of other high-tier teams, and there is reported interest from Virginia Tech and Indiana.

6. Kyron Drones – Baylor

Drones was actually a surprise for many people as it was expected that he could win a starting spot in the Baylor Bears lineup in 2023. He made five appearances for them in 2022 as a relief and had some great performances. Drones was a four-star recruit and his talent should give him plenty of options in the transfer portal.

7. Austin Reed – Western Kentucky

Places like Oregon and UCLA have supposedly got their eye on Reed and it’s no surprise after the Division II success he enjoyed at West Florida. Additionally, during his first season with WK, Reed was a brilliant passer and ranked second in passing yards and completions. He has entered the transfer portal with just a year of eligibility remaining and is looking for a larger program to take him to the next level.

8. Brennan Armstrong – Virginia

There have been plenty of disappointing college football teams and it looks as if Brennan Armstrong wants out of Virginia. He is a former three-star recruit and to date has played 38 games for Virginia with over 9,000 yards passing. The Cavs 2022 campaign was pretty average with a finish of 3-7 and it is expected that Armstrong wants to seek out a team with an experienced coach and a winning pedigree.

This is just the start of the transfer portal and we are sure that there is more to come. Already, some big names such as Devin Leary and Hudson Card have entered, but there could be more surprises to come. You can be sure that we will keep you updated with developments with our NCAA football coverage.
