Individual Awards

Best Player/Name Combo: LB/DE Ogbonnia Okonronkwo (Oklahoma)

This guy is really good at football, and his name is fun to say. Both. That’s unusual, so we have to celebrate him. The Redshirt Senior is the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year after finishing the 2017 regular season with 8 sacks, 153 total tackles, and 17.5 TFL for 103 yards. This man accounted for more yards in 2017 at LB/DE than some RB’s on this list did. As much as you heard this name on Saturdays, you’ll hear it even more on Sundays. Keep an ear out on draft day for Obgonnia Okonronkwo.

Staff Favorite: RB Kezelee Flomo (Kansas)

I don’t know who came up with this name. In fact, I don’t know how anyone comes up with “Kezelee” or “Flomo.” But who knows, maybe they’re family names. Either way, this man does not seem like someone I’d openly make fun of. The 5′ 10″ Sophomore from Minnesota does not have stats, nor a bio, but that’s more of a knock on Kansas than it is on our boy Kez. Keep an ear out in the 2018 season for Kezelee.

Staff Runner Up: LB Amen Ogbongbemiga (Oklahoma State)

Ah, Amen. What else is there to say, really? This Redshirt Freshman has an interesting backstory: Amen is originally from Lagos, Nigeria, but grew up in Houston before moving to Calgary. Those poutine eaters didn’t spoil this one, eh? He didn’t rack any stats, but he gained roughly 20 pounds in his redshirt year, so you can expect to hear Kirk Herbstreit shouting “Amen!” in the next couple years.

Honorable Mention: OL Dwayne Johnson Jr. (Texas Tech)

While not the son of The Rock, nobody should ever let this man forget that he shares a name with the best wrestler/movie star crossover in wrestler/movie star history. Johnson Jr. is a graduate student at Texas Tech after 4 years at Nebraska. The Houston native did not see playing time until his 4th year at Nebraska, so this is his time to shine. Welcome to the big stage, Rock Jr.
