Big East Basketball: The CliffsNotes

By Marisa Miller, Butler University

Three Most Valuable Players:
1. Kris Dunn, Providence
Dunn averaged 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game during the course of this season. He was named unanimously to the All-Big East First Team along with teammate Ben Bentil. Dunn was also awarded Big East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

2. Isaiah Whitehead, Seton Hall
Whitehead averaged 18.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game this year. He was named unanimously to the All-Big East First Team. The Brooklyn native also led the No. 3 seed Pirates to the Big East Conference Tournament title.

3. Ben Bentil, Providence
Bentil averaged 21.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game during his sophomore season. He was named unanimously to the All-Big East First Team along with teammate Kris Dunn. Bentil was also awarded the Big East’s Most Improved Player of the Year.

Biggest Surprise: Kelan Martin, Butler
After averaging 7.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game during his freshman season, Martin’s presence on Butler became much more well known this season. The 6-6 forward more than doubled his averages to 16.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The sophomore was also named to the All-Big East Second Team along with teammate Roosevelt Jones.

Biggest Disappointment: The St John’s Red (lack of) Storm
With their favorite former player, Chris Mullen, returning to his alma mater as head coach, St. John’s finished this season 8-24 overall and a measly 1-17 in Big East conference play.

Biggest Controversy: None
Come on, what did you expect from a league that consists of all Catholic and private schools?

Best Short Video:
Roosevelt Jones of Butler sinks a 3/4 court shot against Marquette as the halftime buzzer sounds to tie the game….and celebrates with a dab.
