The Big Sky, Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and West Coast Conference (WCC) are the latest conferences to postpone all fall sports. This including football for the Big Sky and WAC, until at least the spring. The WAC commissioner stated that the conference is suspending all fall sports through the end of the calendar year. The Big Sky announced it intends to play fall sports in the spring. The WCC COVID committee stated they will do everything in their power to hold fall sports in the spring. These are the latest dominoes to fall in the FCS.
The Big Sky’s presidents council previously announced plans to delay the start date for its Olympic sports during the fall. That would include soccer, volleyball, cross country, tennis, and softball. A start date for the football season is still TBD. Schools like BYU and San Diego, which play most sports in the WCC, have different affiliations for football because the conference doesn’t sponsor the sport. The Cougars play as an independent FBS team, while the Toreros compete in the FCS’ Pioneer League.
If you’re keeping score at home, 11 of 13 FCS conferences already announced the cancellation of fall sports. Due to lack of teams playing, the FCS Playoffs also fell victim to COVID-19. Field hockey, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball are the most common fall sports across the NCAA.
