Week 8 has come and gone, and it is a week I certainly want to forget. My beloved Bearcats lost a conference game to Temple in OT. It was also a week to forget for the Buckeyes. Other teams, however, took care of business. Bama and Clemson won in blowouts, LSU and Michigan won conference games against ranked teams. And somehow UCF wins again and doesn’t move up in the rankings. This week in Biggest Win/Most Cupcake Win of the Week, the Buckeyes get stunned and the Knights take care of business with their backup QB.
Most Cupcake Win of the Week: #10 UCF beats ECU 37-10
McKenzie Milton was out for “general health” reasons. He was fully dressed and, on the sidelines, but was held out of the game. Backup QB Darriel Mack Jr. stepped in and lead UCF to a victory. He ran for 120 yards and a TD, to go along with 69 (nice) yards passing. The score makes the game seem more of a blowout then it actually was however. ECU had a chance to make it a one score game in the 4th quarter but picked up an ECU fumble and ran it back 94 yards for a TD. Then 4 minutes later, Greg McRae broke off a 74-yard TD run to ice the game completely. UCF has now won 20 straight games while still getting very little respect in the rankings, but that is a whole different story. UCF gets the Most Cupcake Win of the Week this week.
Biggest Win of the Week: Purdue beats #2 Ohio St. 49-20
This was a totally unexpected loss for OSU. Having won 12 straight dating back to last season and having one of the leading Heisman candidates on their team, this game seemed like an easy win, but Purdue had other plans. Freshman Rondale Moore had 12 catches for 170 yards and 2 TDs, D.J. Knox ran for 128 yards and 3 TDs, and Purdue as a team outrushed OSU 161-76. The defense held tight against the run allowing only 3 yards per carry. QB David Blough went toe-to-toe with Haskins and outplayed him. Haskins did set school records for most passing attempts and completions, along with the record for most yards. He went 49 of 73 for 470 yards, 2 TDs, and an interception. Purdue students and fans stormed the field after taking down the 2nd ranked Buckeyes in West Lafayette. It was a well-deserved storming of the field and the win gives Purdue the Biggest Win of the Week.
