So on the latest episode of the Student Union Sports Podcast, the boys and I played a game where we tried to guess the Wonderlic test scores of notable College and NFL players. For those of you who don’t know, the Wonderlic Personal Test is an intelligence quiz that the NFL uses to assess the cognitive ability and problem solving skills of players before they enter the draft. In the process of delving deeper into the Wonderlic scores of several NFL athletes, we came across some very surprising results. Also for reference, the test is scored on a scale of 1 to 50, with 50 being a genius and 1 being a potato. A score of 20 is considered to be average intelligence. Below is a clip of the segment from the Student Union Sports podcast, followed by a brief write up on some of our findings.

Ryan Fitzpatrick – Wonderlic Test Score of 48
Not surprised by this one in the least…typical Harvard nerd doing typical Harvard things. Jokes aside, that is one of the most impressive Wonderlic scores ever posted by an NFL player. It’s a shame Fitzy is stuck with Jameis and the Bucs. He may be the brainiest QB in the league, but he certainly won’t be able to fix that organization any time soon.
Colin Kaepernick – Wonderlic Test Score of 38
This score came as a bit of a shock to me considering what a terrible position he has put himself in with the NFL recently. With that being said, Kaepernick balled out on his Wonderlic Test and posted a big 38. For reference, Tom Brady only scored a 33. Kap’s score is certainly impressive, but he will have to sneak his way back into the NFL is he wants another chance to show his intelligence off to the world.
Sebastian Janikowski – Wonderlic Score of 9
I know that kicker is typically labeled a nerd position, but long-time Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski certainly doesn’t fit into that stereotype considering his poor showing in the Wonderlic. He’s also allegedly a raging alcoholic, so I’m sure that doesn’t do too much good for his cognitive ability and test taking skills.
Vince Young – Wonderlic Score of 6
Fucking Vince, just letting down Texas athletes everywhere by playing right into the dumb southern jock stereotype. With that being said, Vince Young is still one of the greatest College QB’s to ever play the game… His 6000 career passing yards at Texas goes to show that sometimes the talent outweighs the smarts.
Greg McElroy – Wonderlic Score of 48
Unlike Vince Young, Greg McElroy spits right in the face of the dumb southern jock stereotype…Who would have thought Alabama athletes received that kind of education? While McElroy didn’t put up the ridiculous numbers that Vince Young did in college, he still managed to help lead the Tide to a national championship with his elite game management skills. Somebody should tell our man at Fitzpatrick at Harvard to watch his back…He certainly has a challenger for the title of Smartest Backup QB in the NFL in Greg McElroy.
