Welcome to the final installment of this year’s Butch Jones Championship of Life Hot Seat. We are going to do things differently this week since we have come to the end of the regular season we already have a slew of firings and new hirings. All coaches on the first 2 tiers have been fired, as well as some other coaches around the country. Let’s go through it all.
We will make a quick check in on the hot seat coaches left. Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech had a come from behind win this week against Texas and most likely saved his job. However, seeing former player Baker Mayfield tearing it up every week for Oklahoma has to hurt his heart. Lovie Smith’s Illinois team got boat raced by Northwestern this week and finished the season on a 10 game losing streak. His seat will be plenty warm all next year and he will need to show some improvement to keep his job.
Let’s make a stop off in the SEC, the conference with the most coaching changes so far this offseason. Jim McElwain got fired a few weeks ago and Florida has hired Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, a former OC for Florida, to replace him. In response to losing their coach, Mississippi State has hired Penn State OC Joe Moorhead, which is sure to be a big loss for Penn State. Texas A&M has fired their coach Kevin Sumlin. Rumors are swirling that this is because Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is coming to College Station next year to coach the Aggies.
More rumors have been swirling around in Knoxville ever since Tennessee backed out of a deal with Greg Schiano. They backed out due mostly in part to fan outrage, including a controversial response written on the rock shown below. Many feared it would be hard to get a different coach because of this but now it looks like they are closing in on a deal with Purdue Coach Jeff Brohm. Arkansas has yet to hire a new coach after firing hot seat member Bret Bielema as he was walking off the field, but stick close to Student Union as something will be up related to that as soon as it happens.
As you can see, most coaching movement has been within the SEC, but there have also been coaching moves elsewhere. At Arizona State, Todd Graham is out as coach, and there have been multiple rumors about a new hiring. Some have suggested Sumlin would be hired in the position, but recently, reports have been out that Herm Edwards is a leading candidate for the vacant position.
Still out of the SEC but moving to the Big Ten, Nebraska has fired coach Mike Riley, a hot seat member. It is extremely likely that UCF coach Scott Frost will be hired for this position but no deal is done yet. Finally, Florida State has been anticipating Jimbo Fisher leaving and has reportedly been looking into Willie Taggart to fill that position. It is unclear whether Taggart would leave his post at Oregon for the Florida State job but we may see soon enough.
It has been quite a wild couple of days in college football. As fellow contributor Clemson Carl has said, they will make a 30 for 30 someday about the day that all this went down. So many big names moving on one day can change the whole landscape of college football for years to come. We will see possibly as soon as next year whose moves paid off and whose moves made their programs crumble.
