They actually did the damn thing and took down #7 Oklahoma! After losing to B1G powerhouse MARYLAND(!) in the first game of the 2018 campaign, it seemed as though Texas was on it’s way to another disappointing end result under Tom Herman. Five wins in a row has ceased that talk though, including taking down TCU three weeks ago and yesterday’s upset in Dallas.
It wasn’t easy by any means, especially when Oklahoma put up 21. unanswered points in the fourth quarter, but a last-second 48-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker put the Longhorns on top for good and had national treasure Gus Johnson yelling about natural disasters…
Sam Ehlinger had one of his best performances in burnt orange, throwing for 314 yards and 2 touchdowns, all while adding 72 yards and three scores on the ground. Kyler Murray was his typical cheat-code-self with 304 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 pick, also adding 92 yards and a score of his own in the rushing game.
Quite possibly the most Big 12 game we’ll see all year, there was essentially no defense and field goal with time winding down is the deciding moment. It’s so perfectly #onbrand, but these are the types of games that haven’t gone Texas’s way since the Mack Brown years.
This was a refreshing change of pace for the Longhorns and they’re right in the mix of the Big 12 with undefeated West Virginia and a Sooners team still working out the kinks. But the road is still difficult from here until the end.
Baylor to Kansas and Everything In-between
Baylor this week should be no problem for Tom Herman and Texas, but Oklahoma State poses an interesting threat for the Longhorns just before the West Virginia Mountaineers pay a visit to Arlington. Justice Hill is the real deal for OK State and creates the biggest test for the Texas rushing defense thus far. Then hosting Heisman hopeful Will Grier to test the will of this Texas team down the road.
Texas Tech and Iowa State aren’t exactly cakewalks either, and then the rematch we’ve had circled on out calendars. Texas returning to David Booth Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas for the first time since 2016.
