Caleb Farley might be the best defensive player in the 2021 NFL Draft. He played quarterback in high school and then signed on to play wide receiver at Virginia Tech before switching to corner. It sure doesn’t seem that way.
Strengths
Let’s just dive right into it. I don’t think there’s a better man and press-man corner in this year’s class and that includes Patrick Surtain. The physical tools Farley works with are ridiculous. He’s got excellent length and press instincts. These create multiple chances for him to make plays on the ball and as a former wide receiver, he has the ball skills to finish plays. He makes plenty of plays in zone coverage as well while having a clear understanding of what the offense is trying to do. His IQ after playing offense for so long really shines.
Weaknesses
Sometimes Farley’s inexperience can still be seen, but he also sat out the 2020 season, so the tape is over a year old. He can struggle to find the best position in zone coverage and can seem unsure at times. He’s not a willing tackler and struggles against the run, two factors that could play into his draft stock.
Favorite Play
An insane showcase of press ability, man coverage strengths and ball skills here from Farley.
Projection
Best Case: Legitimate shutdown corner that erases half the field. He’d be a perennial All-Pro and pro bowler. There is hall of fame potential in a best case scenario for Farley.
Worst Case: The inexperience leads to processing struggles in the league while his lack of run support hurts his ability to stay on the field. Still finds a role as a starting corner.
