If you’re like me, at this point of the season, your team has no chance of making the College Football Playoffs. At this point, aren’t we all just rooting for upsets and chaos to throw off the season and put the committee into the grind? That is why every week I will start compiling a “rooting guide” for fans without contending teams to create the craziest playoff scenarios. On deck for week 10:
#13 LSU vs. #1 Alabama
This is the biggest game of the week and obviously the one that could cause the most chaos. Now I understand that Alabama will likely win, but if Ed Orgeron and the Tigers can pull off the upset in Death Valley, a few scenarios will pop up. For starters, there would become a four-way tie in the SEC West with Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn, and LSU all having only one loss with all of them having wins against the others, further complicating the issue. By the committee’s rankings from this week, they are showing that a lot is going into strength of schedule with not as much of an emphasis on conference championships, but if Alabama is not the SEC champion, could they still make the playoff? And if so, will either LSU, Auburn, or Texas A&M also have a chance?
#6 Ohio State vs. #10 Nebraska
Now Nebraska has been a feel-good story all season, but for the best matchups the rest of the way, the Cornhuskers must fall to the Buckeyes of Ohio State. With a win, Ohio State would solidify themselves as a contender for the playoffs and setup a virtual playoff elimination game for the Big Ten East when they play Michigan next month. This will also create a potential five-way tie in the Big Ten West that Wisconsin should prevail out of, boosting up their #8 ranking, and landing a spot in the Big Ten title game for a chance at the winner of Michigan/Ohio State. This would create another playoff elimination game and if Wisconsin prevails, could force the committee’s hand by putting in a two-loss Wisconsin into the playoff field.
The Big 12
On this one, I’m rooting for the conference as a whole. No one is taking this conference a serious title contender right now, but if Oklahoma, Baylor, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State can all win this week, they will be able to inflate their records and climb up in the polls, thus making wins over each other more impressive. I think it will be interesting to see how the committee handles a one or two loss Big 12 champ if other conferences start losing their undefeateds.
Washington State
Even with the tough loss against Washington last week, I still see a slight scenario where Utah could force their way into the conversation. For this to happen, Utah would just have to win out against a very light schedule and then beat the Colorado Buffaloes to earn their berth into the Pac 12 title game.
Where Washington State comes into play with this would be that if Washington State can keep winning, the Apple Cup at the end of the year with Washington could decide the conference. If Wazzu can make their way into the top 15 by that point, the win will look better on Washington’s resume, thus looking better on Utah’s resume if they can beat Washington in the Pac-12 Championship.
Other teams to root for: Oklahoma, Colorado, Boise State, Texas A&M, Auburn, Louisville, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Michigan, Clemson, Florida, Washington
