On January 16th, it was announced that Dave Aranda would be the next Baylor head coach. In his four years as defensive coordinator at LSU, Aranda was regarded as one of the best coordinators in college. This was evidenced by his $2.5 salary that he was receiving in Baton Rouge. Prior to winning a national championship with LSU, Aranda also served as DC at Wisconsin, Utah State, and Hawaii.
Dave Aranda will step into a good situation in Waco. Matt Rhule left Baylor abruptly earlier this month to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Rhule leaves this program in good shape, coming off of a Sugar Bowl appearance and ten win season. Aranda should inherit a strong roster and team that he can compete with on day one.
LSU now will look to replace both Dave Aranda and passing game coordiator Joe Brady, who joined Rhule in Carolina as OC. In addition to these two important pieces, LSU will also have to replace Heisman-winner Joe Burrow, along with many other players who are heading to the NFL. After a national championship season, it appears that LSU will struggle to keep the same level of play in 2020.
