Last season, Virginia Tech dominated a #7 ranked Duke team in an 89-75 home win. Grayson Allen notably sat that game out after throwing a temper tantrum only a few days prior. However Allen’s presence might not have mattered as Cassell Coliseum was rocking the entire game, with the student section even storming the court after the dub. Let me tell you, as a Hokie, almost nothing is better than fucking up Duke at the sport they’re supposed to be the best at, and this season was no different.

Duke once again came to Blacksburg this year, but this time ranked #5 in the nation, and with Grayson Allen ready to play.

Cassell Coliseum was PACKED for this game. For those of you who have never been, the seats go high up into the corners of the stadium, and people were even sitting there. There were a lot of Hokies but plenty of Duke fans showed out for this game as well.

It was a nerve-racking game to watch. Duke had the lead for pretty much the entire game and even took a fifteen-point lead at one point, but they let Virginia Tech hang around. Very late into the second half, the game was close, and the student section was rocking. In one of the more eventful plays, Grayson Allen drove in on Justin Robinson almost directly in front of the student section, giving us all a very close look at the play. Allen drove in on Robinson, pulled up, and then fell. From our perspective, it looked very clear that JRob had went straight up and didn’t make contact. The refs however thought otherwise and called a foul, and we fucking lost it. I’ve never heard a louder “BULLSHIT” chant in my entire life.

Before the game they put cones in the seats for us students to yell into. Well an angry fan who disagreed with the call decided to launch one of those bad boys onto the court. A ref picked it up and brought it to the scorer’s table, and that’s when Buzz Williams came over and grabbed a mic. He looked at the student section and told us to stop cussin’ and to not throw things. What a guy. Of course we stopped cussing and throwing shit because we respect the fuck out of Buzz.

Later on Chris Clarke hit a last second shot to give us the lead and then Grayson Allen took the ball down the court and missed the game winning three, giving Virginia Tech their second straight home win against Duke.

As soon as the buzzer sounded, the student section erupted and took flight. We stormed the court like there was free tuition down there. This was the second year in a row I’ve been able to stand on the court thanks to Duke. I’m hoping we can make this a tradition because as I said before, NOTHING is better than beating Duke in basketball.
