We are now full send into the college football season. Hopefully, your favorite team is unbeaten, but in the case your team is underperforming and their chances to reach your ideal potential are already gone, I have the insight you need. Put away your biases and cheer for some guys who are going to be front and center this weekend. Here’s five guys who will dominate college football this weekend.
Roman Hemby, Maryland RB
So far this season, Hemby sits just outside the top 20 in the nation in rushing yards with 220. Hemby and the Terps will be at home playing Virginia. The Cavaliers have given up more rush yards, 227, than pass yards, 220, on average through the first 2 games of the year. In a conference filled with great running back tandems, Hemby has been one of the best backs in general and should have a huge game Friday night.
Victor Rosa, UConn RB
Last week, Rosa found tough sledding against Georgia State. Only 10 carries for 17 yards. The Huskies going down early and inability to run limited Rosa. However, it was 2 weeks ago that Rosa had 9 carries, 99 yards, and 2 touchdowns against North Carolina State. This week, Rosa gets a beneficial matchup against FIU. The Panthers will be playing their 4th game already. In the 3 previous, they’ve given up 187 yards a game on the ground. Expect Rosa to be a highlight reel all afternoon before the night games.
Gevani McCoy, Idaho QB
*Insert Snoop Dogg “WHO?!” video* The Vandals are the 5th ranked team in the FCS and even received a first place vote this week after DRAGGING Nevada 33-6 in Reno. McCoy has completed 72% of his passes for 477 yards and 4 touchdowns this year. He’s also added 70 rushing yards while leading Idaho to two 25+ point victories so far this year. That being said, Cal will be a tough game for Idaho. I don’t think he’ll have a video game line in the box score, but I think he could lead Idaho to a 2nd win against an FBS opponent in a row and put people on notice. The next Cam Ward might be playing his home games in the Kibby Dome this year and putting the entire college football world on notice.
Will Sheppard, Vanderbilt WR
If you listen to the “Is It Saturday Yet?” podcast, this name will ring a bell. Esteemed host, Luke Owens, had Sheppard as his player to hitch his wagon to in their SEC preview. So far, Sheppard has 20 catches, 217 yards, and an impressive 6 touchdowns. 20 catches and 6 touchdowns are good enough for T-2 and FIRST nationally, respectively. UNLV has given up 271 passing yards on average through their first 2 games. Expect a massive day from Sheppard on Saturday night.
Trey Benson, Florida State RB
In 2022, Benson ran for 990 yards and 9 touchdowns to the tune of 6.4 yards a carry. It was no surprise that Benson was expected to be one of the best running backs in the ACC and maybe even the country this year. Through 2 games, Benson has a 6-yard average in 2 lopsided wins. Only 21 carries and 2 catches in 2023 means that Benson should be fresh for the Seminoles. Boston College has given up 215 yards a game on the ground this year. I would expect that Benson’s touches get limited by the score in the 2nd half, but could have one of the most ridiculous box scores in the country on Saturday.
