Florida State’s Derwin James declares for NFL draft

Florida State safety Derwin James announced via Instagram Tuesday afternoon that he is declaring for the NFL draft immediately and will not participate in FSU’s upcoming bowl game against Southern Mississippi.

James is a redshirt sophomore and is currently projected as a top ten pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

The safety was one of the only bright spots in a disappointing season for FSU and was the lone Seminole player to earn a first-team All-ACC selection. James was second in tackles on the season for Florida State with 84 and also accumulated two interceptions and one sack.

James is the first player this season to forego his eligibility in a bowl game. Last season, NFL running backs Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey both opted to skip their teams’ bowl games to enter the draft and sparked some controversey about loyalty to their programs.

The 2018 NFL draft kicks off on April 26th and runs through the 28th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
