Jaden Akins committed to play basketball at Michigan State on Thursday, adding to the Spartans’ talented future.
A four-star point guard, Akins chose the Spartans over other finalists like in-state rival Michigan, Northwestern, Florida, Mississippi State and DePaul. He told 247Sports that Michigan State has been a frontrunner since the start.
“I chose them because of how they recruited me,” he said. “They were my first major offer, and they made me not only feel wanted, but they made me feel needed as well. Also, I have a very good relationship with the coaching staff, and I feel like I will fit in well with what they want to do and how they play.”
In the 247Sports Composite rankings, Akins ranks as the nation’s 10th-best point guard and the state of Michigan!s second-best player. He adds to Tom Izzo’s 2021 class that looks to be a foundation for a national championship contender. He joins Pierre Brooks II, the No. 1 player in Michigan, and the top shooting guard in the country in Max Christie out of Illinois.
Akins previously played high school ball at Farmington High, but will be transferring to Ypsi Prep Academy this year. Enomi Bates, who has committed to Michigan State for 2022, also plays at Ypsi Prep. Lansing State Journal reports that Bates has considered reclassifying to the 2021 class. Lansing State Journal is also reporting rumors that 2022 big man Enoch Boakye is considering reclassifying to 2021 as well.
His junior year Farmington, Akins averaged 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. His commitment gives the Spartans three of the top-70 players in the country and the potential to be the nation’s top class, especially with Bates and Boakye potentially reclassifying.
