As National Signing Day came and went, the Georgia Bulldogs came away with the number one class. The program led by Nick Saban disciple Kirby Smart was able to reel in a solid class of recruits. Notables from this class include the No. 2 overall recruit, dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields, 5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell, and 5-star linebacker Quay Walker.
Most fans see this and probably just shake it off as nothing more than a respectable program doing good for itself. However, there is much more to this than meets the eye.
In fact, this may possibly be one of the best things to happen to the sport of college football.
Why?
The time may have finally come for an SEC team to finally overthrow Alabama from their throne, not only in the conference but perhaps in all of college football. It does seem pretty likely, right? Of course, the Bulldogs already came oh so close to take down the mighty Crimson Tide in the national title game this past season.
If Georgia can keep recruiting like this, it becomes difficult to see a reason as to why the Bulldogs wouldn’t be able to find themselves at the top.
At the end of the day though, that’s not the most important thing from all this.
The important thing is that the most hated non-professional sports dynasty (and for some, like me, the most hated in all of the sports) finally collapses. And I guess by collapse I mean not make the championship and or Playoff every single year. It’d be a little too unrealistic to imagine the program (without a major scandal) completely collapsing.
Of course, every little bit helps. There are heroes out there like the aforementioned Quay Walker, who before deciding on Georgia was committed to Alabama. No better way to break the morale of a team than jumping ship last minute to an inter-conference rival. It’s a cruel move, cruel enough that had this been the other way around I may be writing an article on how Walker deserves to be banned from the NCAA for such an act.
For another encouraging sign, let’s go back to the fact that Georgia reeled in the No. 1 recruiting class. This broke Alabama’s 7-year streak of having the top class. In fact, Alabama had the No. 6 this year, which marks the first time since Nick Saban first season as coach in 2007 that Bama’s finished outside the top 3.
Bottomline here is, the idea of Alabama declining is enough to get any college football fan excited…unless you are an Alabama fan of course.
