Tua is obviously the better quarterback, let us make that very clear before we begin.
You may know by now, but Nick Saban went OFF on Maria Taylor when she asked about the QB competition between Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa. Both received fairly equal snaps in Alabama’s opening game, but it was VERY obvious Tua is far and away the better quarterback, yet Saban continues to show loyalty to Hurts.
Now, if you’re a fan of college football, you know Saban is not known for showing loyalty. He left LSU for Alabama, and he’s never been afraid to bench a five-star for a better five-star, until now. So here’s my theory: Saban’s job is much too easy, and he’s looking for a challenge.
Now, hear me out; yes, Jalen Hurts is 25-2 as a starter, but he has been somewhat of a liability in a lot of games in which Bama has had to win despite Hurts, not because of Hurts.
Saban knew coming into this season he was by far the favorite to win the National Championship, and while he could run through these next 13 weeks like a hot knife through butter, he’s toying with his opponents. He’s going to give opponents like Ole Miss, Georgia and LSU a glimmer of hope through halftime, then actually gameplan during the break, come back out and wreck shit with Tua in the second half. Hell, there may even be games that Hurts plays the entire time, just to figure out new ways to win.
Bama’s offense is stacked anyway as they have a whole cycle of five-star running backs; this year it happens to be Damien Harris and Najee Harris. Plus, this might be the deepest group of receivers Saban has ever had. Devonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy, and Henry Ruggs are already seasoned and bring a versatile set of tools to that offense. They’ve just added the electric Jaylen Waddle to that group, so that team should be just fine no matter who starts at QB.
He wants a challenge, and starting Hurts, despite the yells and pleas and cries for Tagovailoa to start, is the best way for him to get that challenge.
If Saban really wants a challenge, I dare him to take a season off recruiting. I’m calling you out Saban, I don’t think you have the guts to do it. Let’s see how well you do without five-stars at every position
