Jalen Mayfield: 2021 NFL Draft Breakdown

Jalen Mayfield, the Michigan man, is one of those underrated prospects that could go day one or fall all the way to a late day two pick because of the class depth. He has the size and strength that every NFL team wants and he’s got the versatility to play multiple positions on the line. He’s a raw prospect that will likely carve out a role in the NFL.

Strengths

Mayfield is a straight mauler. He knows how to finish and block and isn’t afraid to do so. He’s got great technique which allows him to get that leverage to plow through defensive players. Where he thrives is the run game, as you’ve probably guessed. He’s great at getting to the second level and moving backers to create lanes for his running back. He’s also a very smart kid and uses that on the football field.

Weaknesses

He struggles with his mobility in pass sets. He isn’t the most athletic guy in the world, which gives him a hard time with faster edge rushers who use counter moves really well.

Scheme Fit: Outside Zone

Mayfield would work well in any zone run scheme. He moves pretty well north-south and is a mauler all around.

Player Comparison: Rob Havenstein

Both players play with that mauler mindset and are serviceable in the passing game. They both have similar measurements, outside of height, and both hail from the Big 10.

Draft Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs (1/31)

The Chiefs need a tackle and Mayfield is going to be sitting there for the taking at 31. While he might not be the best pass protector right now, he certainly can be good enough for the Chiefs. Mayfield would immensely help the run game, which should help with time in the pocket for Patrick Mahomes.
