And he did not go quietly into the night.
In a move that likely surprises no one, Jason Brown, star of season 3 of Netflix’s Last Chance U, has resigned from his position as coach. The move comes after much scrutiny facing the coach, both from the series and recent actions.
Earlier this week, Brown came under fire for a text he sent to a player on the team. In the text, Brown said he would be the player’s “New Hitler”, alluding to the player’s German descent. ICC made a point to reprimand Brown publicly.
Independence, which went 5-4 last season, was the second school featured on Last Chance U. The fourth season, due this summer, will once again follow Brown and the team. It is unknown if Brown’s firing will be covered or not this season, but I would imagine there will be a special about it.
What made Brown’s firing so interesting (entertaining?) is that he did not go down with grace. In a statement on Twitter (listed below), Brown blamed THE NEWSPAPER. This paper, which originally helped break the news, is “diminishing the program”. Also he, for some reason, listed off all his accomplishments from his time there.
Reports from the community seem to indicate Brown was not especially popular with the locals.
Despite it all, Brown has many supporters. All someone has to is find his Twitter and see his retweets. He may have retweeted 100 shows of support on the day he resigned. For some reason, he also has keyed into a conspiracy revolving around a sports blog, claiming they have conspired against him.
Despite his rough…very rough exterior, Brown does seem to care about his players. And Independence (likely) has lost a pretty good coach. But there is an inkling of suspicion that maybe Brown cares more about his loss of publicity than anything.
On the bright side for Brown, he’ll have plenty of time to spend at his beach house with whiskey and cigars.
