When JD Spielman took a leave of absence in March before spring practices began, there was speculation of his departure. The rumors came to fruition on Saturday night as 247Sports reported the receiver’s decision to leave Nebraska for TCU.
Spielman, who finished last season as a redshirt junior, has one additional year of eligibility remaining. 247Sports is also reporting that Spielman will be able to play this upcoming season after he was granted immediate eligibility. Originally, immediate eligibility seemed unlikely, since it would require cooperation between Nebraska and TCU, which are division rivals.
Sean Callahan of HuskerOnline reports that a source close to the situation said “all parties have agreed it’s time for a fresh start for everyone,” and it was a “mutual parting of the ways.”
Some expected the Gophers to land Spielman, a Minnesota native and the son of Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman. However, according to reports, Minnesota did not pursue Spielman as he looked to transfer, leaving the door open for TCU.
Per the report, Spielman favored TCU after renewing his relationship with Jerry Kill, a special assistant to head coach Gary Patterson. Kill, per the report, was part of the team that recruited Spielman to Minnesota in 2016 and nearly landed him.
At Nebraska, Spielman’s versatility shined. He registered 2,546 yards on 170 catches — ranking third on the program’s record list — and scored 15 touchdowns. He totaled 60 returns for 1,051 yards and three touchdowns in his career while on the special teams unit.
Spielman must bring his success to TCU. The Horned frogs are in need of a replacement for Jalen Raegor, whom the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of this year’s NFL draft, and Spielman could fill that void.
