The New York Jets are on the verge of being historically bad, led by everyone’s favorite coach, Adam Gase. It’s pretty impressive he still even has a job, but it’s likely the Jets are keeping him around to guarantee the first overall pick.
Michigan sits at 1-2 after being embarrassed in back to back weeks by Michigan State and Indiana. Harbaugh is adamant that the Wolverines are close, but I’m not convinced. He’s not a great fit for them, and I think another blowout against Ohio State will be enough to constitute a firing.
Harbaugh is a really good coach, but from the beginning, it never seemed like he really clicked with UM. He can find a new beginning with the Jets, after previously finding a lot of success in the NFL. He had a Super Bowl appearance, on top of an impressive 44-19-1 career record. He worked with MVP and Super Bowl champion Rich Gannon in 2002 as a quarterback coach for the Raiders and helped both Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick become solid starters under his tutelage.
As it would seem, the Jets are on a beeline to take Trevor Lawrence, effectively replacing Sam Darnold. Harbaugh could be just the experienced coach with a great understanding of both the college and NFL game to help Lawrence transition as smoothly as possible to the next level. Going the other way, the Jets could also end up sticking with Darnold and having Harbaugh give some much-needed stability to his hectic early career.
In all honesty, there aren’t a lot of head coaches available for this next year. I’ve seen a lot of fans clamoring for Eric Bieniemy to have a head coaching stint somewhere, but it’s unlikely he’ll leave the league’s best offense for a dumpster fire franchise. Maybe he wants to build a name for himself or work with TLaw, I just find it hard to believe he wants a change of scenery after coming off of a championship.
Harbaugh has the experience, and although he’s been criticized for being a hothead or power-hungry, the Jets really could use someone to take the reins and right the ship.
