Much to the surprise of no one, Jim Mora was let go as the head football coach of UCLA on Sunday. Many were surprised that it didn’t actually happen sooner. They definitely did him dirty though as Sunday was his birthday. They couldn’t just wait a day to do it? Not cool.
After going 29-11 in his first three years with the Bruins, Mora has stumbled the past few to a 17-19 record despite having some really good talent, including future 1st round quarterback Josh Rosen. These UCLA teams have definitely under performed on the field. Between having Rosen and other five star recruits spread across the field, you would think that UCLA would be more than a .500 team and obviously their athletic department thought the same.
Two names that have already been thrown out there as rumors are Chip Kelly and Jeff Fisher. It seems like Kelly is currently the favorite for the Florida job right now, but he’s a PAC 12 guy and his agent graduated from UCLA so there may be a better fit there. As far as the Jeff Fisher rumors, I have no clue. I watched how bad of a football coach he was in the NFL and I can’t believe he’s getting talked about for another coaching job. Fisher is not the coach you want to run your program.
The right coach could step into the situation at UCLA and likely win within the first few years there. While it doesn’t hold as much pressure as say an SEC job, UCLA expects greatness in its athletics. The next hire better get them there or it may be the AD finding himself on the hot seat.
