Jordan Hancock Retracts Commitment to Clemson, Could Choose Ohio State

Four-star cornerback Jordan Hancock decommitted from Clemson on Tuesday, becoming the second player to turn away from a previous commitment to Dabo Swinney and the Tigers in under three months.

Hancock, who committed to Clemson in March over offers from Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia, among others, follows the footsteps of Korey Foreman, the top recruit in the country for the 2021 class, in retracting his original decision to play for the ACC powerhouse. Prior to these two blows, Clemson hadn’t lost a commitment in nearly five years.

The 247Sports Composite Rankings system ranks the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Georgia native as the No. 77 overall recruit and the state’s sixth-best cornerback and ninth-best recruit. He has experience at the safety position, per the site, and compares most to Byron Murphy, whom the Arizona Cardinals drafted 33rd overall in 2019 out of the University of Washington.

“Some of the defensive back’s most prominent skills are instinctive,” writes Charles Power in Hancock’s 247Sports scouting report. Power cites Hancock’s excellence against the top competition in Georgia and refers to him as “instinctive and versatile with the ability to play multiple spots within the secondary,” stating that he has the potential to be a multi-year starter in college.

The No. 6 cornerback and No. 9 player in Georgia, according to 247Sports, Hancock reportedly has ties to Ohio State, which has the top 2021 class in the nation, per the 247Sports Team Rankings, with verbal commitments from four five-star recruits and 11 four-star recruits.  During the recruiting process, he developed strong relationships with the Ohio State coaching staff and the team’s other 2021 recruits.

Both the past and present tip the scale toward the Buckeyes. Over the past five years, the program has produced the most NFL-ready defensive backs in the country, most notably polishing the skillsets of Marshon Lattimore, Denzel Ward, Jeff Okudah, Malik Hooker and Damon Arnette. The list is expected to grow next spring, as defensive back Shaun Wade will likely be a top pick in the NFL Draft, and will likely resonate with Hancock as he makes his decision.
