Justin Fields transferring to Ohio State

The former 5-star and #2 overall recruit is reportedly set to leave Georgia for Ohio State. Fields also seemed to be considering Oklahoma and Florida State, but his relationship with Dwayne Haskins and new head coach Ryan Day seems to have sealed it for the Buckeyes.

What This Means For Georgia?

Georgia will still have Jake Fromm, who has now beaten out two 5-star QBs, for another year. The Dawgs also currently have commitments from three QBs for the 2019 class, including two 4-stars in former Ohio State commit Dwan Mathis and John Rhys Plume. They also have a commitment from a JUCO player in Stetson Bennett IV. However, some think that losing Fields will have terrible consequences for Kirby Smart.

What This Means For Ohio State?

While Haskins is yet to declare for the NFL draft, as the the projected top QB, he will most likely be leaving. The Buckeyes would be left with three scholarship QBs if Haskins leaves, most notably former 4-star Tate Martell. Fields would be the highest ranked recruit out of the group and probably has the most potential. He also offers more of a dual threat than Haskins and Martell, which would be great for the offense Ryan Day wants to run.

When Would He Play?

Fields will reportedly be applying for a waiver to play right away, so he could be playing this fall. Assuming that Haskins goes, Martell will clearly be his biggest competition for the starting job. From the very first “Fields to OSU” rumors, people began speculating about whether or not Martell would also transfer. While that is certainly still possible, he has already said that he wouldn’t leave just because of Fields. However, based on how they went after a transfer, the staff doesn’t seem to love Martell.

At the end of the day, this is an awesome get for Ryan Day in his first weeks in charge of the Buckeyes. The possibility of seeing Fields work in Day’s offense with all sorts of weapons around him has to be exciting for Ohio State fans.

Update: Fields made his transfer official tonight.
