Week two featured some spectacular losers. Florida lost to Kentucky for the first time in 31 years, and the North Carolina Tar Heels got blown out by East Carolina. But this week’s loser of the week is Michigan State.

Late in the third quarter, Brian Lewerke threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to give the Spartans a 13-3 lead, and then the wheels fell off. Herm Edwards rallied his Arizona State team back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, ending the game with a walk-off field goal to win, 16-13.

Spartans senior DB Khari Willis said after the game, “one loss doesn’t mean the end of everything,” but it’s hard to look at what the Spartans have done in the first two games and think they can salvage the season. Michigan State showed the same struggles in week two that they did in week one when they squeaked out a win over Utah State with a touchdown in the final two minutes. Michigan State, through two weeks, has been hopeless in the trenches on both sides of the ball, showing an inability to block for Lewerke  and to attack the opposing QB on defense. Unless Michigan State flips a switch and learns how to block, tackle, and just all-around play football better, it’s gonna be a long season for Spartans fans.
