Four teams ranked in the top-10 suffered upsets in week 7; a wonderful weekend for losing. Penn State lost to Michigan State, Washington fell to Oregon in overtime, Georgia got trounced by LSU, but our Loser of the Week goes to West Virginia.
The Mountaineers took a country road all the way out of playoff contention after getting blown out by the unranked Iowa State Cyclones 14-30. West Virginia’s offense scored 35 or more points in each of their first five games of the season, but struggled tremendously against the Cyclone defense with only one offensive touchdown. Heisman hopeful, Will Grier, only managed 100 yards threw the air with a touchdown and an interception; his performance this weekend will likely land him on the outside of the Heisman race looking in.
West Virginia’s loss may result in an even bigger loss for the Big 12 as a whole, as they now have no clear frontrunner. Texas sits at the top of the Big 12 standings at 4-0, but do we really expect Texas to keep this up and end up in the playoffs? West Virginia may have just cost the Big 12 a spot in the playoff this year…
