On March 13th, Selection Sunday will take place and the 68-team field for March Madness will be announced. Along with this, college basketball fans everywhere will be introduced to some of the best NCAAB players that they have never heard of. In this “Player Spotlights” series, we will dig into some of the most notable players from teams that casual fans may not have had a chance to watch yet. One player that could make some serious noise in March Madness is David Roddy, the do-it-all G/F from Colorado State.
David Roddy Has Improved Every Year
Now in his third year at CSU, David Roddy has shown remarkable and consistent improvement throughout his college basketball career. Roddy is an elite scorer, averaging 19.8 points per game on 58.6% shooting and an astonishing 46.8% from beyond the arc, however this was not always the case. The stocky 6’6” 252-pound junior started out his career as a freshman averaging a modest 11.4 points per game on 46.5% shooting and an atrocious 19.5% from three. As a sophomore, he improved all of these and scored 15.9 points per game and had better shooting percentages of 51.2% and 27.8% respectively. Roddy took another leap this season has already made more three pointers (37) in 2021-2022 than he made in his first two seasons combined.
David Roddy is also averaging career highs in assists (3.0), blocks (1.1), and steals (1.2) this year. He has eight games this season with 3+ blocks or 3+ steals and six games where he exploded for 27+ points. Some of his most notable games include:
- 36 points (13/20 shooting, 7/10 from three) in a 95-81-win vs Creighton
- 29 points (11/14 shooting), 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in an 82-72-win at Nevada
- 28 points (10/15 shooting), 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 2 steals in a 91-71-win vs UAPB
- 31 points (14/20 shooting), 9 rebounds, and 3 steals in an 83-68 win at New Mexico
Roddy is Arguably Leading CSU to Their Best Season Ever
The Colorado State Rams are poised to dance in March for the first time in 9 years. CSU has made March Madness just 10 times in their history (most recently in 2012 and 2013) and the last time the Rams made the Sweet Sixteen was in 1969. They have never had a final four appearance.
At 21-4 this season in a stacked Mountain West Conference, featuring Boise State, Wyoming, and San Diego State, the Rams are right in the mix for the MWC title. Roddy and the Rams have a NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) ranking of 25, a 3-2 QUAD 1 record, and a 6-0 QUAD 2 record. CSU is currently a projected #7 seed in the tournament, according to Joe Lunardi’s most recent Bracketology update and are eyeing a deep March Madness run.
