It was announced today that Mark Dantonio stepping down as Michigan State head football coach would be effective immediately Mark Dantonio has announced via his twitter that he is stepping down after 13 years with the program.
Dantonio announced in his retirement letter that he will remain active in the school’s athletic department, in a role that involves “special products.”
This announcement comes after Michigan State defeated Wake Forest in the Pinstripe Bowl, and when Mark Dantonio said his plan was to return as head coach in 2020.
Mark Dantonio stepping down is a shock. Dantonio is leaving Michigan State as the winnigest coach in program history with a record of 114-57.
In his 13 years, he led the Spartans to three Big ten titles in 2010, 2013, and 2015. In that 2015 season, he also led the team to the third seed in the College Football Playoff. The programs only appearance.
Dantonio also holds the record for program conference championships and bowl wins. He also won Big Ten coach of the year in 2010 and 2013.
It is unclear at the moment who will be named the new coach.
