I almost didn’t believe Bleacher Report when this tweet popped up on my timeline this morning.
To give some context, PSG midfielder Aminata Diallo is a teammate of Kheira Hamraoui on both her club and national team in France. Diallo and Hamraoui are both midfielders. Naturally, it made sense for Diallo to hire attackers to injure her teammate in order to get more playing time, as one would. Last Thursday night, Hamraoui was attacked near her car and was assaulted with a metal bar to both her legs and hands. These injuries required stitches and it is unknown how long she will be out for. Bad news for Diallo- it was all traced back to her, she was arrested, and probably will never play soccer at a high level again. Sound familiar?
In the 1990s, US Olympic skater Tonya Harding was implicated in the assault of teammate Nancy Kerrigan. There, a hitman took a police baton to Kerrigan’s knee in order to ease up competition for the upcoming olympics. Harding was just charged with hindering the police investigation, but it was widely suspected she was the mastermind behind the plot. Kerrigan still went on to win silver at the 1994 Olympics and Harding was banned from competing and stripped of her previous medals.
The moral of this story? Stop hiring thugs to bash your teammates knees. “I, Aminata” coming soon to a theater near you.
