NCAA Football 13 Chronicles: Episode 1

NCAA Football 13

ASU QB #11 Harri Sillings drops back to pass late in the 4th quarter (Harrison Sillings, Student Union Sports)

I consider myself to be god-like when it comes to the NCAA Football video games. Especially when it comes to NCAA Football 13. Which is why I figured that me making another Road to Glory would be a cakewalk. After playing my freshman season, I discovered how horribly wrong I was. I will fill you in on what’s happened to this point.

Harri Sillings (named after yours truly) is a 6’0″ 173-pound dual-threat quarterback out of Adrian, MI. After a heartbreaking defeat in the first round of the MHSAA state playoffs (strip 6 as time expired to lose the game), the 3-star recruit committed to Arizona State to be their QB1.

Freshman Year

His freshman campaign got off to a hot start. A quick 2-0 record had my confidence high and the Sun Devils cruising. Add a heartbreaking loss to Cal in there and now we have #17 Oregon coming to town. It’s PAC-12 After dark and we’re looking to get wild out in Tempe

As you can see in the tweet, rumors were already swirling about the freshman QB entering the transfer portal after he publicly made comments about his lack of confidence in the play calling.

“You can only run so many variations of a jet sweep before the defense knows exactly what’s coming. Run the damn ball? How about throw the damn ball.”

His gripes about the playcalling did not end there. In a tough to swallow 2OT loss to Oregon, head coach Steve Coggins called for four straight run plays down 7 on the Oregon 10 yard line. The four plays resulted in a total gain of 0 yards and the season continued to go downhill from there.

The Sun Devils mediocracy continued as they went into the Coliseum to face the 11th ranked USC Trojans. It was a bloodbath. Sources say the game was played with a running clock in the second half.

This is all you need to know about the freshman campaign. It wasn’t very good, especially by my standards, but we showed glimmers of promise going into year two.

Sophomore Year

Year two started off with a true test at home with #11 Wisconsin. A game that we saw ourselves in early until a pitch on a speed option was taken to the house on a drive that would’ve given us the lead. That game ends in a 42-17 loss. Follow that up with a 55-28 loss to Stanford and a 27-14 loss to UCLA.

Sitting at 0-3 we head to Washington State for a battle of the winless. It’s another PAC-12 after dark clash in the middle of a blizzard. The following tweet sums this game up.

Which brings us to current day. Sillings name is being whispered around the nation as a lock to enter the transfer portal by seasons end after his gripes about playcalling continue. He’s 50-92 on the season for 1122 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He also broke the NCAA record for the longest touchdown pass 3 times. In 38 attempts as a rusher, he’s run for -45 yards, 1 touchdown, and fumbled 6 times. He also leads the NCAA in sacks taken at 19 through four games.

The Sun Devils have a tough slate of games ahead playing #9 Notre Dame at home this week, #10 USC at home the following week, and then go on the road for #22 Utah State after that. Will the young QB be able to turn things around? You’ll have to wait for episode two to find out,
