You came so close to giving us our first upset of the day.
Thus far, on the first day of March Madness, we have not been gifted that many upsets. Minnesota doesn’t really count, and Yale put up a fight, but New Mexico State vs. Auburn seemed like the best bet. The Aggies were considered one of the best mid-major teams in the country, and a popular upset pick against a hot-and-cold Auburn team.
Despite going down big in the second half, the Aggies managed to battle back and make it a one possession game with 6 seconds left. Down 2 and driving toward the basket the Aggies inexplicably passed back and attempted a three pointer. It was short, but Auburn fouled the shooter, giving New Mexico one last shot to win the game.
They missed the first, then made the second. And completely bricked the third off the front of the rim.
Thankfully, the Aggies were given ANOTHER opportunity when Auburn lost the ball out of bounds. So with 1.1 seconds left, the Aggies took one last three pointer to win the game. It was an airball.
For New Mexico State , this is a disappointing end to a great season. This loss ends the nation’s second longest win streak at 19 games.
For Auburn, this sets them up on a date with the winner of the Kansas-NorthEastern winner on Saturday. Despite the win, Auburn fans might me a little more nervous now than they were coming into the tournament.
