Greg Schiano is reversing course and returning to Piscataway. A Rutgers program Schiano helped restore former glory at between 2001 and 2011 is less than a shell of its former self in its current state.

Before embarking on a (short-lived) head coaching career in the NFL, Schiano held a 68-67 record with the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers, then in the Big East conference, posted a 28-48 conference record during Schiano’s tenure.

Since the departure of the decade-long head coach, the programs holds a 37-65 record. Not great, ESPECIALLY considering Schiano’s successor, Kyle Flood, accounts for 27 of the wins and only 24 of those 65 losses.

Simply Put…

Rutgers is in pretty bad shape. Schiano’s final game with the Scarlet Knights was a Pinstripe Bowl victory. Since Flood’s departure? Out-coached, out-recruited and out-played.

Until tonight, there wasn’t a lot of hope in Piscataway. With the news of Schiano’s return, there’s a hopeful and positive outlook. The fix for the Scarlet Knights isn’t minimal and it’s not an overnight job, either. It’ll take time. But that’s why the Scarlet Knights locked up their new old coach for a reported eight years.

Now the hope in year one is to appear formidable, competitive and better on the field.

Schiano’s effort to restore glory to the oldest football program in the country in his first go-around proved successful. Arguably a tougher task looking ahead, it’s time to recapture the magic.

Schi-Saw

Schiano reportedly turned down a previous eight-year offer from the university. What changed in the last week? Surely we’ll know in the coming hours or days, but it comes as quite the surprise.

Quite the late night bomb.
