The middle linebacker is almost always the defensive leader on the field. The position is responsible for relaying signals from coaches and covering sideline to sideline. No player embodies that more in the 2021 NFL Draft than Missouri’s Nick Bolton. It’s time to take a look at what makes the linebacker special.
Nose for the Football
Bolton had incredible sophomore and junior seasons. He was a two time All-American per Pro Football Focus and was by far the best linebacker in the SEC in 2019. What makes Bolton great? His ability to always be around the football is astounding. Throw on any Missouri Tigers tape and he will always be in the play. This is seen through stats as he finished top 20 in total tackles in the country this season. The 2020 game against Kentucky showed off his sideline to sideline ability tracking QB Terry Wilson across the field.
Big Play Ability
Not only is he an elite tackler but Bolton’s big play ability separates himself from others in his class. He had two interceptions in 2019 including returning one of those for a touchdown. He also had three sacks in 2020 showing an ability to get into the backfield along with nine tackles for loss. Also, the linebacker has a knack for making huge plays. This play contributed to a season changing goal line stand in an upset over LSU.
Summary
Bolton’s stock is all over the place depending on what scouts you read or ask. Some have him as a late first round pick while others see him more as a middle of day two pick. How he tests at Missouri’s Pro Day next week is going to be huge in determining his draft position. No matter how he does next week, the team that drafts him will be getting a hard-nosed old school middle linebacker to lead their defense.
