No Love: Gonzaga

I feel like I’ve seen this story hundreds of times before. Gonzaga destroys opponents for five months. Gonzaga makes tournament as high seed. Gonzaga suffers an early exit. It is a movement as old as time itself, yet I find myself thinking, “are they for real this time”? Maybe we should let our minds wander no further and just believe.

Since the days of Adam Morrison and Co., Gonzaga has had trouble being taken seriously in the national title conversation. Many have said across the country that this may be the best Gonzaga team of them all, and I may have to agree. While playing weaker competition in the WCC, Gonzaga has destroyed their opponents to the tune of only one conference loss all season. Every week it seemed like the Zags were winning by 30+ (that’s because they basically were).

This Gonzaga team has already defeated Florida (4 seed), Arizona (2 seed), Iowa State (5 seed) and St. Mary’s (7 seed) three times! What more do they have to do?? They are also the number 8 team in RPI and an impressive 2nd in BPI. In addition, Gonzaga is 1st in the country in defensive efficiency and 2nd in offensive efficiency. At what point do we start taking the best, most well-balanced team in the country seriously?

I personally think this team has what it takes to get to the Final Four, and possibly more. Mark Few is one of the best coaches in the land and deserves to be recognized as such. I think this team has done everything they’ve needed to in order to prove their legitimacy to the American public. Everything, that is, besides winning it all.
