According to several reports, two of college football’s most storied (and hated) programs, Notre Dame and Alabama, are in the works of scheduling a home and home series.
Apparently, Alabama is also discussing the possibility of a home and home series with the Texas Longhorns as well. This is no doubt great news for any college football fan.
But Notre Dame/Alabama! Even if you are like most of the country and hate these two programs with a passion, you can’t deny how good those two names sound together.
According to reports, the series will likely take place in the late 2020’s, so we have about a decade to wait it out. You can definitely argue that the games won’t be very good as long as Nick Saban would still be coaching on the opposite sideline from Brian Kelly.
I mean, I gotta admit, Nick Saban pretty much is the reason I despise Alabama. He’s responsible for making them the overly successful and easily hateable program they are today!
Of course, as a Fighting Irish die-hard, I have a strong personal hatred towards this program. As many remember, the two teams last met in the 2012 national championship game. Let’s just say, things didn’t go so well for the Irish that day. (Notre Dame lost 42-14)
So the opportunity to play Alabama again (even if I have to wait till my 30’s) is an absolute dream come true.
Overall, I think this shows that college football as a whole is heading in a very bright direction. Usually, Alabama spends their non-conference schedule playing comically inferior Division 1-AA opponents. Yeah, not even just non-power 5 teams, 1-AA! A little childish of them if you ask me.
Now you have to give them credit for opening up against big-name opponents the last several years. Of course, the results typically don’t make it look like they played a “big-name opponent,” but what can they do about that?
I’ll tell you what you can fucking do!
Schedule more big-name programs! And that’s what they’re looking to do in the future.
Anyone that says they want them to continue wasting their non-conference schedule on cupcake teams just doesn’t appreciate the sport of college football properly. It’s something they arguably should be sentenced to college football jail for quite honestly.
Bottomline, if Alabama (or any school for that matter) wants to be all big and tough, there’s only one way: Only schedule power 5 opponents! (or UCF!) It only does the game of college football good and I believe Alabama is starting to realize that. I still strongly hate everything they stand for, though.
