Are the Oklahoma Sooners the Best Program of the Modern Era?

By:  Jesse Crittenden

College football can bring out the best and the worst in all college football fans. It brings out our arrogance, our cockiness, and our irrationality. However, it has given me some of the best memories of my life. It has lead to plenty of friendships I have had for years. It has also led to some of the worst arguments I’ve ever been in.  When it comes to most topics, I am open-minded and understanding, but when it comes to college football, I can be just as arrogant as the next fan. That is because I am a fan of the greatest football program in the modern era: the Oklahoma Sooners. Here are five statistics on why I am right to be arrogant about this, and why everyone who disagrees is wrong

  1. The Sooners have the most total wins since 1946 – 628 wins

Oklahoma has experienced more overall success than any other program, and it’s really not even close. The next closest is Ohio State with 583 wins, 45 wins behind the Sooners. This stat alone could close the book on the argument, but I’ll go ahead and list more to seal the deal.

  1. The Sooners rank second in total win percentage – .76446

Now before you think, “Ah ha! They aren’t first!” well, stop right there. The Sooners are only second to Boise State. The Broncos have played 449 games less than the Sooners, and play in the far superior MWC conference. And you know what they say about Boise State – they suck.

  1. The Sooners hold the record for the longest win streak in NCAA history – 47 wins (1953-1957)

The streak has long been considered to be untouchable, with the second longest streak belonging to Toledo’s 35 wins from 1969-1971. The Longest streak of the last 20 years belongs to Miami (FL), with 34 wins between 2000-2003. The Sooners also own the fourth longest streak, totaling 31 wins between 1948-1950. The 47-game winning streak resulted in two titles in 1955 and 1956. This is just another example of dominance for OU.

  1. The Sooners have spent the most weeks ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll – 101 weeks

They are currently tied with Ohio State at the top spot. However, the Sooners have played 46 more total games, putting them at a slight disadvantage in holding the top spot. Because even though Ohio State is a respectable football program in their own right – they also suck.

  1. Two in one – Oklahoma has the most consensus All-Americans (76), and second most AP-Poll National Championships (7)

Alabama manages to take the top spot for most national championships, thanks to their recent run of dominance. However, this is the only major category that Alabama has the advantage over Oklahoma. Still, even in the few categories Oklahoma doesn’t have the top spot, they are usually very close behind.

  1. Oklahoma is the best because they are the best. And because I said so.

This, I think, is by far the most compelling argument. Boomer Sooner!
