After a heated debate throughout the offseason, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy still hasn’t found a starting quarterback. When asked about the situation on his weekly radio show, Gundy’s answer, along with the updated depth chart, kept the speculation going.
“Should we take a lot into who starts Friday night in Corvalis?”
“No, both will get a chance to play,” Gundy responded.
Last season the starting job fell to a fifth-year senior, Taylor Cornelius. Cornelius led the team to a 7-6 record, and a Liberty Bowl victory over 23rd ranked Missouri. Now that he’s graduated, his job is up for grabs. Out of the 4 quarterback’s on OSU’s roster, two have emerged as the frontrunners for the starting position.
Spencer Sanders was a stud in high school. In his senior season, he lead Denton Ryan High School to the Class 5A D1 semi-finals. That year he won the 2017-18 Texas State Gatorade Player of the Year award, and was ranked as a 4-star prospect by ESPN and 247Sports. He has not played a down of NCAA football in his career, and got his first reps in an OSU uniform during the spring game.
Sanders is going up against Dru Brown, a graduate transfer from Hawaii who came to the program last year. Coach Gundy decided to redshirt him, since he’d never been redshirted in his college career. He was a two-year starter at the University of Hawaii who lead the Warriors to a 7-7 record his first season starting. Now he is a sixth year senior for Oklahoma State, and hoping to be the starter in his final college season.
Fans have been hounding Gundy since February about who his starting quarterback will be. Gundy’s answer has always been the same. Both will play. He will most likely use a two-quarterback system, like he did in 2015 with sophomore Mason Rudolph and Senior J.W. Walsh. That team went 10-3 and lost to Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. Coach Gundy is hoping for a similar end to that season after an abysmal 7-6 2018 campaign. He hopes to start off this season with a win Friday night against Oregon State (10:30 PM ET, FS1).
