The Pac-12 announced on Friday that it has approved a plan to further modify its football schedule for this season.
Expanding on the conference’s decision to adopt a conference-only scheduling method, this plan allows for flexibility, per a press release. Teams will play 10 conference games — five at home and five on the road, — and the probable date for the start of the season is Sept. 26. Ordinarily, the first game is at the end of August and each team plays 12 games.
The conference’s season will end on either Dec. 18 or Dec. 19, with the conference championship game. The game will demonstrate a home-hosted model this year. As part of this plan, the Pac-12 reached an agreement with its partners to play the conference title game in 2021 and 2022 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Each team has bye week on its schedule and Dec. 12 is an open date across the conference. The conference said in the announcement it included these built-in gaps in preparation for possible cancelations due to COVID-19 outbreaks.
“The schedule and plans approved today and path to return to competition are subject to public health orders and will be taken in accordance with the health and well-being guidelines developed by our Pac-12 Medical Advisory Committee,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in the announcement. “The schedule and return to play plans provide for maximum flexibility and the best opportunity to play all fall sports in an environment that prioritizes safety.”
Earlier this summer. the Pac-12 was one of the first leagues to transition to the conference-only schedule format. Its decision to delay and reduce the season emulates those of the ACC and SEC. The ACC is including Notre Dame for this season and will play 10 conference games and one nonconference game. The SEC, on the other hand, has outlined a conference-only, 10-game schedule.
