It’s been a few weeks since the National Championship game and people are still talking about the performance of the Alabama football team. Many forget that Alabama was the fourth seed entering the playoffs and didn’t believe this team should have even made the playoffs in the first place. It’s mind blowing, isn’t it? After dominating Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, Alabama went on to beat the #1 team, Georgia, with Tua Tagovailoa, the true freshman quarterback starting the second half off the bench.
But, many believe (especially the state of Florida, including Governor Rick Scott) that UCF earned the title of National Champion, based on their undefeated 13-0 record, even though they only played in the Peach Bowl. The opposition though claims that their competition wasn’t to the same degree of difficulty as Georgia, Oklahoma, or a power 5 conference school. Yet nonetheless, UCF managed to defeat Auburn. This is the same Auburn team that also beat Alabama, and the same Alabama that beat Georgia in the National Championship. Regardless of the games played throughout the season, UCF beat Auburn in the most important game of both of their seasons. So does this mean UCF could have potentially been National Champions after beating a team that beat the National Champion? It is understandable the committee didn’t think UCF’s resume was impressive compared to Georgia or Oklahoma, but they also did not lose a single game.
Alabama’s best win the entire season was against #18 LSU and they did not beat a team ranked in the top 10 whereas a team like Ohio State beat three ranked teams; two of which were in the top 10, and they weren’t considered for a playoff spot.
So my question comes to this… Do the playoffs need to expand? Do teams like UCF need to be considered solely off of an undefeated record? Or do teams need to strictly start playing better teams throughout the regular season to boost their resumes? Because it comes to a point that even the teams that win their conference still don’t make the playoffs; like Ohio State.
After seeing Alabama win five National Championships since 2009, I don’t know about you. but it makes me want to see college football expand to eight seeds in playoffs. Schools this year like Ohio State, Auburn. TCU. or UCF wish that there would have been more than four playoff spots.
But at the end of the day, Alabama is the 2018 National Champions, so give it to ’em.
Roll Tide.
