Week One of the college football season was everything we could have asked for as fans. Upsets, great games, and all day action. In case you missed any of it, here are some of the big headlines after the dust settled.
Georgia tops Clemson in Top 5 Matchup
It was a defensive slugfest down in Charlotte with the Bulldogs coming away with a grinder of a 10-3 win over Clemson. Watching the game, it felt like a clear case of experienced and well-coached defenses beating up on young and inexperienced offenses. Clemson’s offensive line did not help new starting QB D.J Uiagalelei who was sacked 7 times. Perhaps more concerning was their lack of a run game, or even trying to run the football. 9 carries for 24 yards is unacceptable moving forward for the Tigers. As for Georgia, their defense once again looks championship caliber but they’ll need more than 22/30 for 135 yards and a pick from USC transfer JT Daniels.
UCLA looks like the best team in the PAC 12
It is early. And the PAC 12 tends to self destruct. And maybe this is an overreaction after Oregon had to sneak out a win over Fresno State. But the Bruins look really good to start the year. Fast play makers everywhere and a defense that is sneaky good as well. Chip Kelly out-coached Coach O to the tune of 38-27 at the Rose Bowl behind 117 yards on the ground from Zach Charbonnet and a bunch of big plays by QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. UCLA is the prime example of why Top 25 rankings should not come out until after Week One.
Texas is back? And ready to win the Big 12?
If you watched Week One in the Big 12 in a vacuum, it would be hard to argue against the Longhorns as the cream of the crop in the Big 12. They rolled a very good, nationally ranked Louisiana team 38-18 and QB Hudson Card looks like a worthy replacement for Sam Ehlinger. Moreover, RB Bijan Robinson is everything we expecting him to be, rushing for 103 yards and adding another 73 through the air. Meanwhile, Oklahoma barely squeaked out a win over Tulane and Spencer Rattler looked shaky. Fellow Big 12 top ten team Iowa State won an ugly 16-10 contest over FCS Northern Iowa. Texas is back is obviously said in jest, but the Longhorns did look like they could be right in the mix in the Big 12 this season. Tom Herman may finally be the answer to their prayers.
Alabama is still really good at football
Breaking news, I know. After a 44-13 beatdown of Miami (FL) it seems like Nick Saban didn’t miss a beat after losing so much talent to the draft last season. Instead, Saban now has more weapons to spread the ball around to and QB Bryce Young stepped right into Mac Jones’ shoes with a 27/38 day, tossing 4 touchdowns to go with his 344 yards. Roll Tide.
Iowa, Penn State take two biggest B10 games on Saturday
It started with a classic defensive battle between Penn State and Wisconsin that ended in the Nittany Lions taking a tough road game 16-10. Now I’m not quite sold on Penn State, I think it’s more of Wisconsin just not being as good as expected. Nonetheless, it’s a solid win for James Franklin’s squad to start the season. What I was impressed by was a 34-6 blowout win by Iowa over Indiana. They made QB Michael Penix Jr look lost for the Hoosiers and impressed on offense, running the ball with ease. Iowa QB Spencer Petras is capable of more, but he managed the game well, as much as I hate that term. Wisconsin still has time to figure it out, but the Hawkeyes look to be the best team in the Big 10 West right now.
