While we’re still in a bit of a dead period leading up to the NFL season, we finally saw a noteworthy signing. The Las Vegas Raiders inked four-time All \-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters to a one-year deal. As of right now, the financials of the deal haven’t been announced. Peters spent the last three and a half seasons with Baltimore playing in 37 games. Over those 37 games, Peters made 138 tackles, 8 interceptions, and 25 pass breakups. In addition to those numbers, Peters made 2019 First Team All-Pro as a defensive back and 2019 Second Team All-Pro as a cornerback. Since then, he’s dropped off a bit missing the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL.
Peters will bring veteran leadership to a young and depleted Raiders secondary. Before signing Peters, the Raiders were going to have to start cornerback Duke Shelley. Shelley hasn’t played a full season in his NFL career, and over three seasons he’s only tallied 1 interception and 12 pass breakups. Peters is a much better alternative to starting Shelley or Brandon Facyson.
While this move doesn’t fix every issue that the Raiders secondary has, it’s a step in the right direction. Peters still has some gas left after making 47 tackles and 6 pass breakups last season. I’m just excited to see what he’s going to do in silver and black.
